Remember Me

A day in the life of the average man

A day in the life of the average man

On a quite ordinary morning, the average man left for work at 7:30 a.m. He arrived at the office at 8, greeted his colleagues with “Good morning,” and went into the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee.

There was nothing special about his routine. Emails, phone calls, staff meetings – it seemed to be just another boring day.

After lunch he decided to take a walk around the office buildings before going back to his paperwork. He was strolling when he heard someone say, “Excuse me?” He turned around to see a pretty, elegant woman with long hair wearing a floral dress. She had a lightness about her, her voice soft and warm, her smile full, her teeth white, her eyes bright, and her face glowing with excitement.

“I’m new here. Do you happen to know a good restaurant nearby?”

He could have gazed at her for a good hour without saying a word.

“If you have time, maybe you’d like to,” she paused, half hesitant, half eager, “join me?”

His heart was pounding. Not every day did he get such a tempting offer. More than her beauty, it was her charm – so unlike his wife – that kindled his desire.

He contemplated the offer…

“Eh, I’m sorry, but I have a lot of work to do.”

She looked disappointed, but thanked him politely and went her way. He kept gazing at her until she disappeared from sight. Her offer boosted his ego, and he felt a pang in his heart for refusing it. If only he had said yes, but he was married to a loving wife.

He went back to the office, walked past the secretary, and closed the door behind him. He sat at his desk, unable to concentrate on his work. He was torn between his loyalty to his wife whom he loved from the bottom of his heart and the opportunity that had presented itself at lunchtime. His brain rationalized his decision. But he was desperate to fall in love again, because since meeting his wife several years ago, he had forgotten the thrill of wooing a woman. He felt he had really missed out. He knew that if he had accepted the offer, they would have ended up in bed together. It was plain as day.

He left the office at 5 p.m. and went home. He came in the door with obvious reluctance. His wife could tell his mood just by taking a glimpse at his body language. He looked withdrawn, preoccupied, a little upset. She offered him a drink, and he looked at her thinking, “I’ve made a sacrifice for you because I love you,” but he had to bite his lip. He couldn’t tell her about the chance encounter. His life was predictable and ordinary, and such incidents were not supposed to occur. He was in a predicament, feeling frustration and disquiet.

At night, when his wife got into bed with him, he didn’t hug her, his sex drive suppressed. He felt guilty that the woman whose name he didn’t know had caused him such emotional turmoil. His wife fell asleep, but he stayed awake for a whole hour, going back over the brief encounter in his mind, wondering what might have happened if he had said yes.

The next morning the alarm clock woke him up, and as he opened his eyes, he recalled yesterday’s event and promised himself that today he would order lunch to his office. He was afraid that next time he might find himself caught up in an unwanted adventure. All he hoped for was an ordinary day.

Alternate scenario

He contemplated the offer…

“It will be my pleasure to buy you lunch. Let’s go, before I have to go back to work.”

On their way to the best restaurant he knows in the area, he called the office to let them know that something unexpected had happened and that he would be late, so not to worry.

He introduced himself and asked for her name.

“I’m Ashley,” she answered, smiling. She told him how she had arrived there and about her work. He was enchanted by every word she said. They had lunch together, and it was as if he forgot he had already had one; his appetite had reawakened. She didn’t conceal her interest in him, and he didn’t hide his desire for her, flattering, touching her when appropriate, feeling very easygoing and confident. When it was time for dessert, they were already sitting side by side. The waiters left them alone, seeing them enjoying each other. He kissed her, her intoxicating smell giving him a perfect sense of calm, savoring the kiss, her luscious lips, and her delicate skin. He feels a strong desire, love at first sight. If this were a private location, they would have had sex. It was plain as day.

After he paid for the meal, they walked out hand in hand. She told him it was wonderful and gave him a hug. He flattered her again, caressing her face, kissing her, and said he had to go back to work.

“When will I see you again?” she asked.

He replied that after work he was going home to his loving wife.

“Your wife?” Ashley asked astonished.

“Yes. We’re polyamorous,” he answered, winking at her.

Ashley stood still, wondering about the man she had just met and watching him disappear from sight.

After work he came home considerably late but radiating happiness. His wife recognized that something good had happened, and even before she asked, he told her.

“I met an amazing woman. Her name is Ashley. I took her to lunch.”

“Really? How was it?”

“Did you sleep with her?”

“No. I didn’t get a chance. But that’s not the point. I think I’m in love.”

“Then invite her over to dinner!” His wife favorably suggested.

“I don’t have her number. She was quite surprised to hear I’m polyamorous. She must have thought I said polygamous. Anyway, I had a great time. Let’s go out tonight and celebrate!”

When they came back from their night out, tired but content, the man was incredibly horny. His wife knew that a new love strengthened an existing one. As they made love, he rediscovered his wife’s beauty and power. He felt that his wife was without rival, and that Ashley could at best be his secondary partner.

He was a very average man in a relationship based on honesty and trust at a level unheard of in the monogamous world, where jealousy and possessiveness prevailed.

Ashley explained away the man’s behavior by telling herself that he was misleading his wife. She didn’t understand. She had missed out on an uplifting love.
